Euro may pose next overseas threat to U.S. firms

NEW YORK, April 27 (Reuters) - The next overseas threat to corporate America may not be in Latin America or Asia but in Europe, where a drop in the new single currency may cut the profits of multinationals like Coca-Cola Co. (KO - news) and Gillette Co. (G - news), economists said.

A 10 percent sell-off in the euro since it was launched at the start of the year makes it more expensive for Europeans to buy U.S. products like razor blades, a can of Coke or a Boeing airplane.

It also means fewer dollars in the coffers of U.S. companies when profits of their units in Western Europe, home to some of America's biggest trading partners, are converted back here, the economists said.

''In the short term it certainly hits sales and profits and in the longer term it may require a fundamental rethink about their strategies for this market,'' said Benn Steil, senior fellow and Linda J. Wachner chair in foreign economic policy at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.....
