WATERLOO, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1999--
New web-based solution enables companies to combine real-time supply chain visibility and monitoring activities with real-time dynamic route optimization
Descartes Systems Group (NASDAQ:DSGX) (TSE:DSG) announces the release of a powerful new dynamic supply chain solution, Energy DeliveryNet.com(TM) Mobile Business Optimizer (MBO). This complete packaged solution will enable companies and their customers to monitor delivery activities via real-time messaging, gain instant awareness of sudden changes to plans, re-optimize delivery activities and instantly remit new delivery details back to field personnel and customers via the Web. DeliveryNet.com MBO will benefit a wide range of businesses, from those with complicated field service operations to Internet-based home delivery businesses to transportation companies with global supply networks to private fleet operators. "DeliveryNet.com MBO is ideal for those companies who need to take customer service to the next level," said Kenneth Bob, senior vice president of product strategy for Descartes. "Descartes recognizes that in today's competitive markets, delivery and customer service are key differentiating factors and we continue to apply cutting edge technology to our supply chain management products to better help our customers excel in both of these areas." The new offering combines Descartes' inter-enterprise architecture of Energy DeliveryNet.com, the incremental optimization power of Energy Dynamic Routing and the real-time messaging capability of their wireless applications. These applications are implemented on the RIM Inter@active(TM) Pager from Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) (TSE:RIM) and other handheld devices to extend supply management to the level of the individual vehicle. Mobile Business Optimizer utilizes DeliveryNet.com to electronically connect shippers, carriers, customers and delivery vehicles via the Internet and a variety of other networks. Based on real-time information transmitted by the mobile wireless application, Mobile Business Optimizer dynamically recalculates delivery schedules and triggers automatic alerts to trading partners and customers in the delivery chain. Planned routes are sent to trucks via wireless communications tools as the day begins. As deliveries are made or delays occur, the driver sends update messages to Energy Dynamic Routing. The Energy incremental optimizer re-plans the route if necessary, and DeliveryNet.com sends automatic alerts to the customer's web browser application regarding delivery status. This dynamic link between delivery and customers continues throughout the supply chain cycle. "The combined power of our inter-enterprise architecture and resource optimization tools are changing the way that people view the supply chain," said Art Mesher, executive vice president at Descartes. "We're moving into a 'zero latency' environment in which companies are expected to become a clean and elegant extension of their customer's environment." Mesher added, "In the past, system performance and total cost of ownership suffered due to challenges inherent in the 'piecemeal' approach that companies had to take to put these systems together for themselves. Our new offering brings an integrated extensible solution to the market."
