Yes, I am familiar with what happened in 1989 and I would be very surprised if Iridium did not account for this in their design. In a LEO satellite with the type of stabilization that Iridium uses, fuel is only used to correct for drag, and it will typically correct with a very short 1-2 sec burn every day or so, depending on the factors you discuss. Iridium may have other technical problems, but I am very confident that they will not be related to any orbital problems.
