John, >>> keep in mind that IBM is not standing still either. Various interations of NT and Novell software can run under S/390 servers. I know Intel has been lagging IBM in stock performance over the past two years or so, maybe IA64 will give the stock the push it needs <gggg>.<<<

I admit Gerstner is doing a wonderful job for IBM shareholders, but if IBM is going to thrive in the future under Gerstner, it will be in the services sector.

Who in his right mind, if they had a clean sheet of paper, and haven't invested forty years and tons of money on mainframe software, run NT or Novell software in an MVS environment.

IBM's hardware business is not as rosy as the investment community is thinking. Sales of AS400's and RS 6000 hardware are down according to latest quarterly report. PC sales are up, but they are still losing money (thier cost structure in this area is inherently high - due to IBM legacy culture and will never be competitive to Dell).

Gerstner is doing a great job with the investment community - something that Intel should take a look at to see how they can emulate.

Otherwsie, IBM is buying back shares to increase PE, but they are borrowing money to do so - like magic. Their net profits are only about 40% of Intel's (percentage wise).

Mary
