Porter, I agree that many times people think they're getting screwed when there are legitimate reasons (eg a change in volatility) for what is happening. The problem is that it requires investors/traders to trust that they are being fairly dealt with.

Recent articles such as "Fun and games on Nasdaq" in the January issue of Forbes, and "Regulators Worry That Online Investors May Be Getting Poor Trade Executions" in Friday's issue of WSJ make it pretty clear that folks do get screwed pretty regularly.

That kills any trust. So, when people see strange things happening with their trades, their first inclination is to think "I've been screwed".
