KXPK-FM 'The Peak' Issues Statement
DENVER (April 26) BUSINESS WIRE -April 26, 1999--Bob Visotcky, Vice President and General Manager of radio station KXPK-FM (96.5) 'The Peak', issued the following statement today regarding shock-jock Howard Stern's comments about last week's tragedy at Columbine High School:
"We, like most members of the Denver metropolitan community, were offended by some of Howard Stern's remarks regarding the tragedy at Columbine High School which he feels were taken out of context. We deeply regret any harm or suffering they may have caused, a message we have broadcast on-air since last Friday. As members of the community, we share the pain caused by the tragedy at Columbine, and our heartfelt sadness goes out to the children and parents of the victims, as well as to the survivors who must endure.
"Neither myself, 'The Peak' staff, Chancellor Media Corporation nor any of its employees endorse those comments of Mr. Stern which may have been insensitive to the tragedy. The Howard Stern Show, airing weekdays 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on KXPK-FM 96.5 'The Peak', is a nationally syndicated program produced by Westwood One, a CBS Corporation entity. 'The Peak' broadcasts the show because there is, and continues to be, demand for his programming among Denver listeners.
"Even before Mr. Stern's comments aired last Wednesday, 'The Peak', as well as the rest of the Chancellor family in Denver, have worked around-the-clock to help ease the burden of our friends and neighbors by sponsoring blood supply donations, raising to-date over $13,000 for victims and survivors of the tragedy and helping people cope with their emotions by making counselors available to grieving listeners. We understand there is much healing ahead, and we at 'The Peak' are committed to supporting that process in any small and meaningful way we can.
"I personally spoke with Mr. Stern about his comments last week. He was distressed to learn his comments have been taken out of context and tomorrow morning live on 'The Peak' he will set the record straight."
