2)Less ego and more business savvy(how many diversions and missteps have we had that are the direct result of the LE/BG battle of egos?

What diversions and missteps do you put in this category? The NC appliance was constantly put forth by the media when Larry was just talking about it as the front end of the Network Computing Architecture. The bottom line is that Larry's vision of a server-centric, three-tier, thin-client architecture is becoming reality. Client/Server is pretty close to dead as an environment for new development.

If you are determined to look for missteps, there is N-Cube, but that is Larry's personal money and he never said much about it except for a brief Oracle push into massively parallel machines almost 10 years ago. Oracle Media Server and video on demand never really got off the ground, but that was years ago also.

As far as business savvy, what do you call taking an IBM research paper on relational database and using it as the basis for building the first commercial RDBMS, even before IBM had a product to sell? Or growing that company into the second largest software company in the world? Or moving effortlessly into position as the back-end of choice for the explosive e-commerce market? Just lucky I guess. Or maybe it's really all Ray Lane's doing, and Larry is holding the company back.

I won't dispute that Larry has a BIG ego. There is also something about his voice that grates on me, but hey, I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't like listening to New Yorkers like me. I have to take exception to the commonly voiced concern that Larry's ego and antipathy for BillG have an adverse effect on Oracle. It may mess up the strategies of some short term traders who get blindsided by the market reaction to one of Larry's "outrageous" statements. But they were never making their money based on rationally motivated price fluctuations, were they?
