Your husband is obviously living in the past. Intel has 550MHZ chips out right now vs. UNIX market struggling around 350MHZ mark. Your basic $200 PC graphics card does 6 million triangles/second. If you want more power there is a whole host of very high end graphics cards for the PC. SGI has switched to an x86 arhitecture running NT; currently their 540 station. Like I said there is no room for proprietary iron on the desktop anymore.
