I realize that there may already have been too much petarding around on the thread, but you know what! You're right!

This is also a wonderful example of the great consonant shift, or Grimm's Law, that changed words beginning with "c" into "h" in Germanic languages--so that what is "centum" in Latin is "hundred" in English; "cor," "coeur," "card--" becomes "heart." And "p" becomes "f"; "pater" becomes "father," "piscis" becomes "fish" and "péter" in French is "to fart." Even the Sanskrit word for "fart" begins with a "p."

I appreciate very much learning about petard--can't believe I spent two years of my life in France without learning the word for an activity that I seem to engage in more freely every year.
