Suma - it's possible to send a private message on SI. Just click on the person's name, which will take you to their profile. Up at the top, you'll see "Send a private message". Click on that, and you're in business. If someone sends you one, you'll know that it's there because there'll be a nonzero number in your 'Inbox'. (This number is also nonzero if someone replies to you publicly on SI, but will go to zero once you read it. If it stays nonzero, you'll know that there's a private message. Click on 'Inbox' to read it.). I'll also send you this message privately so that you can see how it works.
