Digital format chosen for second BS-4
satellite
The Posts and Telecommunications Ministry decided Friday that a
digital format should be used for a second BS-4 satellite, due to be
launched around 2000.

The ministry concluded the digital format has become the mainstream
global technology and will contribute to the development of related
industries.

The analog format has already been chosen for the first BS-4 satellite,
due to be launched later this year.

The decision comes despite intense lobbying from semi-governmental
Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK), which transmits its high-definition
programming in an analog format.

The ministry will ask the Radio Regulatory Council to review its policy
backing analog satellite broadcasts.
