This business about how PC's are going to take over the workstation market was a hot topic in '96 & '97, but it isn't anymore.
You seem to think that PC's are cheaper to buy & own. PROVE IT. The last time I checked, low-end Ultra's were priced competitively with high-end PC's with a price performance edge & SUNW's famous RAS to make them a much more attractive buy as a workgroup server and as a workstation.
If the PC "onslaught" were succeeding, why would the original CPQ CEO get fired & why would HWP CEO Lew "PC" Platt have gotten the heave-ho, & why would IBM CEO Lou Gerstener declare that the PC era was over, & why would DELL have been downgraded and seen its stock sink 20% since the split???? Maybe you think that SGI is on the way back since they've finally "seen the light"??? SGI has just announced a big new direction for themselves: it's spelled L-I-N-U-X. They're selling SO MUCH NT, that they've decided to go with Linux.
Yeah, James, PC's are really taking over the workstation market.
Ever since the Ultra 5 & 10 were announced, SUNW has been back-ordered on them. SUNW had to up its manufacturing capacity to keep up with all the demand, & they still are back-ordered.
You think it's only PC makers that know how to use manufacturing efficiencies, James??? Guess again. SUNW designed the low-end Ultras to use PC-type manufacturing so their margins on them don't suffer.
Hardware isn't where the battle is anymore, it's software & SUNW wins that hands down. |
