rrufff,

I don't think so. By AT&T potentially becoming the largest CATV company in addition to the largest long distance carrier they are forcing their way into the lucrative local service market.

I certainly see the advantages of ADSL versus cable modems which, as you indicated, are direct to the CO versus the contention based service that cable modems are. I believe that as the traffic on the cable modems pick up the cable vendors will be forced to extend additional fiber loops into the neighborhoods to relieve this congestion.

ADSL also has some inherent problems that will require the Bell companies to actually go out into the field to remove some conditioning coils and tap lines to reach out the full 18,000 feet that ADSL DMT for instance will support.

By AT&T forcing their way into the local market they will be able to recoup some of the estimated $16 billion a year that they pay the Bells for access fees!

I think that the purchase of Media One if it goes through to be a stroke of brilliance and shows the incredible foresight of Armstrong.

Cheers,

Steve
