Intel and Dassault Systemes to work together on software optimization for Intel Architecture and Pentium III Xeon Processor

Jump to first matched term

CeBit, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1999--Intel Corporation and Dassault Systemes (Nasdaq: DASTY) have agreed to work together to optimize CATIA, the world's leading CAD/CAM/CAE software, for current and future generations of Intel(R) microprocessors.

As a first fruit of this collaboration, Dassault Systemes' CATIA Version 5 takes advantage of the performance boost offered by the Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processor. Launched at CeBit, the Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processor offers the workstation user industry-leading price performance and incorporates Intel's leading-edge technology Internet Streaming SIMD extensions, which deliver enhanced 3D graphic visualization, improved video and animation capabilities.

The collaboration between Intel and Dassault Systemes, formalized in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in November 1998, will ensure the availability of industry-leading CATIA Solutions on Intel Architecture platforms now and in the future. CATIA customers will benefit from the combination of both companies' leading-edge technologies, and from Intel Architecture as it evolves through both 32 and 64-bit platforms. As part of the agreement, Intel will support Dassault Systemes' laboratories, ensuring that development and implementation plans are synchronized.

"This agreement is another step forward for the adoption of Intel Architecture in the workstation market segment. Most of the largest and most prestigious automobile, aerospace, heavy equipment, and consumer goods manufacturers in the world use CATIA as the core component of their product and process development. They'll now be able to do that work even more effectively and productively on the Intel Architecture," said Anand Chandrasekher, General Manager of Intel's Workstation Products Group. "Our companies share the same vision for providing unique, high-end technologies and value to customers. Intel's commitment to working with Dassault Systemes will ensure that CATIA on Intel-based workstations delivers best-of-class performance."

"We are extremely pleased to establish this technological collaboration between our two companies," said Bernard Charles, President of Dassault Systemes. "This is great news for CATIA Version 5 customers who will take advantage of the native implementation of CATIA Version 5 on Intel Architecture and from Pentium III Xeon processor performance boost".

CATIA Solutions on Intel Architecture widens access to advanced and scalable product modeling applications and increases productivity.

CATIA Version 5 has been completely re-engineered to maximize the benefit and the advantages offered by the Intel Architecture. It utilizes next generation object technologies and leading-edge industry standards and delivers an innovative and intuitive user interface. The result is an easy-to-install, fun-to-learn, and natural-to-use system. Its native OLE and Internet/intranet Web compliance enables system integration within the office environment and across the digital enterprise. CATIA Version 5 delivers breakthrough, scalable applications for companies at all levels in design automation. At its core, CATIA Version 5 builds on powerful smart modeling concepts enabling the capture and re-use of corporate engineering knowledge and the implementation of generative rule-based product development processes. Version 5 offers compatibility with Version 4. This allows both systems to be used together and provides a smooth progression for existing users.

Discreet Announces Support for the Intel Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) Processor

Optimized Software Delivers Faster Rendering, Expanded Interactivity and Immediate Availability

MONTREAL, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Discreet (Nasdaq: DSLGF - news) today announced that paint*, effect* and 3D Studio MAX® its award-winning Windows- NT based paint, special effects and 3D modeling and animation

software, have been optimized to run on the new Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processor. Discreet has rewritten several filters in paint* and effect* to take advantage of the new Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) instructions in the Pentium III chips. All three applications are multi-threaded by nature so they take full advantage of multiple CPU systems, one of the many advantages of the Xeon processor. There are currently eight optimized filters expected to be available on March 17th direct from the Discreet website (www.discreet.com).

The recently launched 3D Studio MAX R3, a major new release of the world's best-selling professional 3D modeling and animation solution for PCs, also makes full use of Streaming SIMD optimized drivers for Open GL, Heidi and Direct 3D. For example 3D Studio MAX has seen an approximate 30% increase in viewport performance using Autodesk's Heidi Driver allowing animators to work more efficiently, saving time and allowing animators to concentrate on the next step of the creation process.

Mahmoud Al-Daccak, vice president of products at Discreet, commented, ''Artists using paint*, effect* and MAX will see huge time savings when using the optimized paint* and effect* plug-in filters and accelerated display which are expected to be 30% faster. We will simply offer the enhancements as downloads from our website, so users can immediately take advantage of the latest technology and best possible tools for the job. We are looking forward to the possibilities of optimizing more filters in the future that take advantage of the Pentium III instructions.''

Discreet tested the performance of the new 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor rendering a video sequence in paint*. The test compares the relative performance of the 450 MHz Pentium II Xeon processor, using plug-ins that presently ship with paint* and effect*, with a 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor, using pre-release versions of these plug-ins optimized to use Streaming SIMD Extensions. The sequence rendered 90 frames of video, making extensive use of the new optimized Gaussian Blur, Dolly Blur and Lens Flare using Streaming SIMD Extensions. The results of the test showed that this sequence could be rendered 2.5 times as fast with the new filters on the 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor. Other video sequences and video effects may show different performance results, but on average the new filters are about twice as fast as the original filters running on the same CPU. In some cases the new filters were found to be four times as fast.

paint* and effect*

paint* is an interactive, vector-based painting and animation system for manipulating and enhancing both still frames and frame sequences. effect* offers digital artists distinctive video compositing, clip animation, and visual effects capabilities. With these applications, digital artists become directors of moving pictures: painting, animating and modifying images for film, video, web, animation and multimedia. Both applications share a library of special effects plug-ins; a number of these plug-ins have been optimized to take advantage of Streaming SIMD Extensions. The first eight filters to be made available to users are Gaussian Blur, Unconstrained Gaussian Blur, Dolly Blur, Pan Blur, Lens flare, Twirl, MinMax, 3D depth of field
