The Japanese government said it will add its voice to the call to forgive all official development assistance debt owed by the world's poorest countries, the Asahi newspaper reported without citing sources. The U.S. and most other Group of Seven industrialized nations are already planning to support the plan for 100 percent debt cancellation, to be proposed at the Group of Seven summit scheduled for Cologne, Germany, in June. Japan will propose extending the repayment period for such debt to 40 years, and replacing the loans with grant aid, effectively forgiving all the loans, the Asahi said.
