WT, I have seen some ten years old fabs, fully depreciated chunking product away. Personally, I do not think it is good business practice, because these fabs usually are left with the crumbs off the table of the biggies, and thus their margins are not sufficient to afford more modern equipment ( and thus more competitive products), but not all chips suppliers can survive with spending 20% of sales on capital expenditures, and thus the count of outmoded and unclosed fabs keeps growing (see the recent paucity of new fabs announcement to see how that malady is spreading in the industry).
