[multiplexors in the central telco office]

Michael, There are two major problems that have to be solved before xDSL achieves ubiquity. 1) Low power consumption (remember the teleco system uses battery backups in many places, and the cost of power and the heat generated by the power cause expenses for the TeleCo) and, 2) xDSL is a paired service a modem in your house and another one in the CO. imagine if the only way xDSL service were to work was to have this strict pairing of modems to users (according to recent FCC testimony the current relationship of modems to users for ISP's and OSPs ranges from 10 - 1 to 40 to 1, ie 1 Access Server side modem to 40 uesrs). The answer lies in the DSLAMs (DSL Access Multiplexers and Access Concentrators) these are used to aggragate the users to the CO equipment and free up the one-to-one paining in the CO.
