Lorrie. I learned to fish as a very young boy.My dad used to take me to a place called Pine Lake and I would catch sunnies and throw them back. One day I told dad that I wanted to take one home to keep as a pet. In his wisdom he agreed and I brought the sunny home in a coffee can. It of course died in a very short time. A sad little boy learned a very valuable lesson about living things that day.My great love of the out doors kept me fishing catch and release long before it was popular.I turned to fly fishing when, believe it or not, the idea of torturing the worms got to me. Believe me impaling a worm on a hook and dangling it out in front of a predator is indeed torture. Something I felt guilty about for many years.To this day some times on a rainy night I walk outside in the rain and rescue worms that have crawled onto the street and throw them onto a lawn or such. I hope that by the time I die that I will have rescued as many worms that I tortured to death. I believe as I suspect you do that "man" has some evolutionary induced instinct to hunt [fishing being the same ]We get enjoyment from the hunt much like One of Michelles cats. I can't deny this. Fly fishing catch and release with barbless hooks is the best I can do to still satisfy the itch and keep my conscience clear. I know that the Trout don't enjoy this experience but I am convinced that with proper release procedure they are none the worse for wear. <<Rationalize. Justify...>> When Dave refers to eating his prey he gives him self away.Clearly in a modern world this has no relevance. He knows this, but it is the best he can do. Better that he comes to grip with the truth.Hunting or fishing is something he does for pleasure and feeding him self has nothing to do with it. The predator prey relationship is not pretty but it is real and the entire biology of the planet has evolved around it.We are the top of the food chain and as such we do have every right to take prey animals.[Personaly I have no stomach for killing but pass no judgement as of course I am not a vegetarian.] but the game has changed due to the nature of our dominance.I believe as I have said on many occasion that we have been granted steward ship over this planet and it's living things. As such our taking of prey animals must be limited to those that are in abundant supply as compared with their natural place in the ecosystem.There are just too many of us to take prey as our ancestors once did.Unfortunately some like Dave are not convinced and as a result have an exaggerated impression of their "right" to take these animals.This is evidenced by his disdain for those who would dare to "interfere" with his legal but questionable moral right to do so......... Sorry to be so long winded but this is my subject. pez
