Well, controlling the nations (or more specifically, the people) is the hitch. No, they can't really do that, other than by propaganda, coercion, and if all else fails, force. But that doesn't stop them trying, and occasionally succeeding.
I think that another major problem with classic conspiracy theory is the notion that there are so many things that this disparate group of power-mongers can agree on. I've never belonged to any organization that didn't spend most of their time fighting with each other about what they should be doing.
But I still believe that there are times and situations where enough people with enough power come together and make a concerted stab at pulling the wool over our collective eyes. And sometimes they even get away with it. And I think that the near gut-level recognition of that is what leads people (all too often myself included) to look for those conspiracies everywhere. But that's the only way they're going to be found, so...
It can absolutely be stated that power-hungry people will do what they can to further that power, and it can't hurt to be on guard for that. Besides, it's more entertaining for me than, say, Freecell, or television. |
