I think the U.S. would have been able to cope with the ''small islands'' for another 50 years :o)) Japanese's life expectancy is one of the highest (80 years on average?) but the ''gaming'' process was sort of hampered...

Regarding the atomic bombing of Japan, I seem to remember that Truman's decision was aimed at keeping the Soviets at the (Asian) gate... There're scholars who claim that a regular carpet bombing of Japan would have been enough for a Japanese surrender.
But the U.S. wanted to send a strong signal to the rest of the world and there was Oppenheimer's pet project (the Manhattan project): the military was eager to gameplay their new nuclear toy...
