I wanted to take note of your digression on popular culture. It is my observation that popular culture is pretty shallow regardless of origin, because it is directed to an audience that is not very reflective, well- educated, or "cultivated". The virtues of popular culture are the virtues of the people---- vigor, sincerity, faith, broad humor, and a taste for the heroic. I love delicate and ironic little dramas---- probably my favorite movie is "Rules of the Game", by Jean Renoir--- but I also love "Kindergarten Cop". I actually think that most mass cultural products are sillier and more vulgar in other countries than here, for the most part, as I mentioned in an earlier post, and therefore that American pop culture is (relatively) an improvement... |
