Well, CIO's often are working on implementing new info systems,
etc on development cycles that are completely independent of
the rest of the company. The technical/systems challenges
of these projects are often the main factor in making a CIO
job attractive (from surveys, etc in ComputerWorld
("The newspaper for IT leaders" per its byline).

So, it may be that the COMS CIO left for reasons that relate
the amount of interesting work to be done at his new job
vs. his old job at 3Com. It's not like he's moving to
a better company - he left Dell to move to 3Com, which I think
re-inforces my hypothesis that the prospects of the company
are not the primary factor here - or else he would have never
left Dell (not if he had any brains, anyway). (I own far more
Dell than I do coms).
