Russia Duma leader praises Moscow-IMF deal.
MOSCOW, April 29 (Itar-Tass) - Vladimir Ryzhkov, head of the Our Home
Is Russia (NDR) faction in the Duma on Thursday praised the agreement
between Moscow and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"This is very positive news, good news, it will strengthen the
government's positions," Ryzhkov told reporters.
"Despite all pessimistic forecasts, the agreement is a success of
(Prime Minister) Yevgeny Primakov, (First Deputy Prime Minister) Yuri
Maslyukov, (Finance Minister) Mikhail Zadornov, and all those involved
in the negotiating process. I am very glad to have this result achieved,
" he said.
Ryzhkov paid special attention to the agreement on the restructuring of
Russia's foreign debt for 20 years. "This shows that we have a chance
of implementing the 1999 budget.
"We shall receive an absolutely stable situation in terms of
implementing the budget. There will be no hyperinflation or a very
abrupt collapse of the rouble.
"The state will meet its obligations to the employees of the public
sector and the defence industry," he said.
The successful Moscow-IMF talks confirm "the course of Russia's
economic and market-oriented reform", he said.

Yeltsin confused by Mandela's arrival
MOSCOW, April 29 (UPI S) _ Russian President Boris Yeltsin briefly
slipped up during his greeting of visiting South African President
Nelson Mandela (Thursday), apparently confusing him with U.N.
Secretary- General Kofi Annan, who is also in Moscow for talks on the
Kosovo crisis. Yeltsin praised Mandela for the work he was doing in
solving the Yugoslav crisis, before correcting himself.
