This is pretty important news, especially because MediaOne would benefit from this exact 2-way service. This is the kind of news that SHOULD drive GIC's price a little higher:

General Instrument Teams with Cisco Systems to Provide Dual-Return Path Cable Modem Solution

GI Combines Industry-Leading Telco-Return SURFboard(R) Cable Modem with Cisco's Universal Broadband Router and AS5300 Universal Access Server

HORSHAM, Pa., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news) today announced that it has joined forces with Cisco Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO - news) to offer an advanced dual-return cable modem solution. This dual-return system enables cable operators to take advantage of both radio frequency (RF) and
telephone return paths using one integrated solution. This end-to-end system combines GI's Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)-based SURFboard® SB2100D cable modem, Cisco's DOCSIS-qualified Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) and Cisco's AS5300 Universal Access Server.

The combined GI and Cisco technologies provide the ideal solution for cable operators who want to offer DOCSIS-based modems now but have not yet activated an RF return path. The SURFboard SB2100D modem
provides 100% market coverage on ''Day 1'' by adding an analog telephone modem inside the cable modem. The telephone return-path operates per the DOCSIS TRI specification for telephone-return cable modems. Once the cable plant RF return path is activated, the modem will roll over to the new upstream without requiring a truck roll. In fact, the SB2100D can sense the required upstream path and switch automatically, with no user intervention.
