Sorry, brees. To tell the truth, I'm mostly with you on this one, but it comes down to how you define "the culture". I'd say it's got to be grass roots, not ordained from on high. My understanding is at least some on the religious right are coming to this view too. Politics as currently practiced in the U.S. has gotten so corrosive, it just doesn't seem like the place to look for leadership.

What I'm going to say next is sort of rude, and it's really not meant to dump on the poor guy, but there's always a problem with symbolic leadership versus reality. The Reagan administration was certainly effective in turning the country in a conservative direction, and I can understand conservatives revering him. But the kids got shipped off to boarding school at the earliest opportunity. Fans of Orwell might be given pause by his views on that subject. There's family values, and then there's family values.
