Let's put these per minute charges in perspective. I just did a little investigating with Ameritech, and asked, "How much would it cost to phone some countries using my cellular phone?"

The answer was that normal airtime charges would apply, plus long distance charges. Cellular charges work out to something in the range of 20 cents per minute, depending on what usage plan you are on. Long distance charges quoted were as follows (from St Louis):

Long Distance All-in Charge

Japan: $1.91 to 1.15 $2.11 to 1.35
Indonesia: 2.40 to 1.30 2.60 to 1.55
France 1.56 to 0.82 1.76 to 1.02
Israel 2.20 to 1.20 2.40 to 1.40

The range in charges reflects different times of the day or week.

When viewed in this light, charges of $1.50 per minute retail (replacing the cellular component of a call) does not seem so expensive a component of an overseas call. Does anyone have any idea how much call volume there is internationally? Maybe that's another way to get a handle on G's potential market (remembering that their main business is expected to be in in-country calls)
