Teradyne Dn 11%; SoundView Removed Co. From Focus List
Dow Jones Newswires

No further information is available at this time.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of Teradyne Inc. (TER) shed 14% Thursday after SoundView Technology removed the company from its Focus List.

SoundView analyst Michael O'Brien said the continued price decline of dynamic random-access memory, or DRAM, chips has made him more cautious about capital equipment companies including Teradyne. Capital equipment companies make the products necessary to manufacture memory chips, most often used in personal computers.

O'Brien said he also questions expectations that spending on memory chips will be very aggressive towards the end of 1999 into 2000.

But Tom Newman, Teradyne's spokesman, said memory chips accounted for only about 18% of the company's total revenues in 1998. Additionally, Teradyne has been frank in the recent past about expectations for spending on memory chips, Newman added.

"The fact that memory isn't showing great growth is not surprising," Newman said. "We're surprised that Mike (O'Brien) is surprised," he added.
