Placer Dome Inc - BC Business says Placer execs like Chile's mining climate Placer Dome Inc PDG Shares issued 250,058,657 1999-04-28 close $20.5 Thursday Apr 29 1999 BC Business reports in its April 1999 edition that Placer Dome executives based in Santiago have high praise for Chile's economic climate and attitude toward mining. Chris Taylor quotes Ron McLean, Placer's vice-president of human relations, as saying: "The standard of living is quite good; the economic community is solid. It's feeling the effects of low prices also, but it's a healthy, dynamic climate to work in." Mr. Taylor reports that more than 130 B.C. companies are operating in the country, including Teck and Cominco, attracted in part by what he refers to as a government that is "almost obsessively" free-market. Mr. McLean's colleague Jeff Thompson has been in Chile since 1993, when he helped establish the Zaldivar mine. He says Chile's healthy mining environment has reached a critical mass that is bolstered by support industries such as transportation and pipeline developers. These growing economic ties spill over into non-resource sectors, Mr. Thompson says. In British Columbia, exploration funds for local development are at a 20-year low. This contributes to the Vancouver Stock Exchange's poor performance.
