BK,
I have struggled with y2k for over a year now.I have tried to look at both sides. You just can't seem to get definative answers. No matter what the Pollys or Doomers say the other side disagrees and the flames begin.Yet we now seem to be in some kind of slowdown period, there are less postings here and in other forums that I monitor.I don't know if this is the lull before the storm or what.
There has been a ton of money spent by almost every major company and
government agency. Most claim they are on target, that they will be done.I would like to believe them.My brother believes them.My wife believes them;but I don't!I try but I just can't.
I do believe that many companies have made significant progress but I worry about things like your statement:
"But Y2K is different. You can't revert to backups if your systems are affected by
Y2K problems… the backups will have the same problem. The only solution is to
fix the problem. And, if you haven't been able to fix it by the time that it infects your
system, you probably wouldn't be able to fix it in time to salvage your system."

You are making essentially the same claim that Cory Hamasaki is:that "Where" the work is not done much/most of it will not be.There is to my knowledge only a few banks and one or two non banks that claim to be compliant. And does it really matter; if the rest of the world is not compliant as they could corrupt the data bases?

So much of the Polly arguments is based on trust.Trust the companies their goal is to do what is right not what is profitable.Trust the feds they never lie!Trust your vendor they will spend whatever it takes to solve your problem.Trust your local govt they're totally competent.Trust Billy he will lead us in battle with the same bravery
that he showed in Vietnam.OOPS sorry about that last one, must be one of those senior moments.I'll finish my thoughts another time.

J.L.T.
