Sorry I couldn't respond to the Thomson/MusicMatch item sooner. I have been away from a computer running errands.

The Thomson news is not new....it was posted at zdnet.com news section yesterday. I don't think it does anything more for MP3 than was already there. We already know that MP3 is widely used. We already know you can (or use to) make money selling the devices. The question is if MP3 will become the default online distribution format. And, IMHO, it will not be. Besides, with new technology, the entrance of the "solid state" behemoths usually signals that the technology is already on the way out. "Hi, we're Thomson, we took over a year to get the idea that people download and play these files called MP3....we want to sell you an overpriced appliance."

Regarding MusicMatch, they are the creator of the somewhat popular MP3 encoder/decoder/jukebox organizer program called Music Match. And, IMHO, it's a POS. You can download a copy from there website (I think it limits the number of MP3s you endcode, but there are cracks which remove the protection). In fact, Thomson displays their ignorance by even investing in the company. Wooohoooo....a software company that makes a software package that could be whipped up in a couple weeks by any small software company. As is typical, the "solid state" behemoth shows they really have little to no clue when it comes to new technology.
