yeah.
I had a professor in college, when I was studying Comparative Political Systems, who claimed that the Founders were just wealthy people intent on creating a system that allowed them to maintain their positions as power brokers.
He was, of course, a Communist who also claimed that (1981) the US was in decline and the Soviet Union ascendant.
Anyway, while there is a grain of truth in his comment about the Founders, I questioned him on the validity of the claim, since the freedoms they offered opened up so many opportunities for people...more than they'd ever had before.
He claimed that was just "smoke and mirrors" and that nothing of the sort ever really existed - that we fooled ourselves with our national mythology. I suppose we do fool ourselves with that from time to time, but I'm hard pressed to believe him on this point.
