The AT&T patent #5592470, issued Jan.7, 1997, primarily grants patent claims associated with a complex wireless architecture for optimizing broadband and narrowband channel availability and throughput. I read the patent through carefully to confirm my expectation that it was targeted at cellular and PCS bands (the bands AT&T already controls in so many markets, including the D and E blocks they just acquired at auction.) While the CLAIMS of the patent are not frequency specific, and therefore apply to any wireless spectrum, I was surprised that the ILLUSTRATIVE EMBODIMENT (description of a practical implementation) section specifically illustrates the entire system in MDS/MMDS/ITFS spectrum allocations (2150-2162GHz plus 2500-2690GHz.) That represents no limitation of the patent claims to that band, but I found it interesting that the inventors, at least, clearly had the wireless cable frequencies in mind for their channelization plan.

I would imagine that the service capabilities suggested in the patent with significant customer penetration would be a tight fit within constraints of a 25MHz cellular channel (not really repurposeable anyway - though the patent includes support for mobile communications) plus one or two 10MHz PCS channels. The 2.3GHz band coming up for auction mid April would not appear to be ideally partitioned for AT&T's patented approach, though I expect it could work.

Looks like an interesting year is shaping up ahead below 3GHz.
