AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1999-- IXC Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:IIXC - news) today announced that Mark S. Lefebvre has joined the company as vice president, data services engineering.
With more than 16 years of management experience, Lefebvre was most recently divisional vice president of internet engineering for Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), which was purchased by GTE in 1997. His most prominent achievement was leading the engineering of the backbone for BBN's commercial Internet, in which his team integrated a number of regional networks into a single, nationwide Tier 1 ISP network.
In 1995-96 with BBN, Lefebvre also directed the design, build-out and operation of a nationwide dial-up network for AOL (America Online). His early BBN work included overseeing the Defense Simulation Internet (DSI) program, the first real-time IP network put into operation, and used by the military to support simulation exercises. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Lefebvre, who reports to Mike Vent, president of IXC's network services, is tasked with managing the design, engineering and support of IXC's nationwide, high-speed Internet Protocol (IP) backbone, called Gemini2000, and the value-added services that run on that network.
Last December, IXC launched Gemini2000, the first coast-to-coast, next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) OC-48 backbone network to carry both commercial and research traffic at 2.5 gigabit per second speeds. Lefebvre and his engineering team will deliver a cutting-edge network with a new breed of applications such as virtual private networks, telemedicine, advanced engineering, and distance learning environments. In addition, Gemini2000 will offer a full range of voice, data, Internet and integrated communications services to IXC's more than 115,000 small and medium-sized business customers. |
