michelle: the problem with your statement is one of return on investment for each dollar of advertising revenue. I can't come up with a model for advertising revenue that's not grossly deflationary for both the ad revenue business and for product profit margins. It will be good for the consumer but not necessarily for e-commerce.
I can advertise in any number of places that costs me nothing. So if it costs me nothing, and it costs you nothing to read my advertisement, how is doubleclick going to make a profit? Hmmm?
now I write a check to my local utility company, and I get electricity and ISP and search-engine access and a place for a home page. And I can invest in them and get a dividend every month that pays for the next month's check. They have stuff that has high barrier to entry- power plants, wire into my house, routers, etc. Now this I understand.
