Very contemplative post, Mike. Now let's think about this for a minute. How do the RBOC make their money today? Mostly, they're a monopoly right? What would (will) happen when they're not? How will they make their dough? When sats and wireless are everywhere and cheap, how will the RBOC's turn a buck and stay in business? They probably won't, will they? I mean unless they use their present wealth to buy up the new providers, how could they compete?

The RBOCs ought not to be able to make any more money than the integrated oil retailers when they compete against each other on every street corner. If there were 10 of these oil retailers in the country, and they each had 10,000 stations in the U.S., and they each competed in each market vigorously, they couldn't make excess profits. But if they agreed to carve up the U.S. into 10 regional markets, where each company had an exclusive...well, you see how they would make money then, even though each one had the same number of stations as before.

Now I don't think that this is going to happen in telecom. So there is going to have to be something that we don't presently comprehend that will stabilize the player environment into a dozen or so companies each of which does make a lot of money.

What is that something? Any ideas?

Morgan
