Southern Gaming Summit to Examine Problem Gambling PR Newswire - April 27, 1999 09:59
Two Sessions Feature Harvard Medical School's Dr. Howard Shaffer and Debut of New American Gaming Association Responsible Gaming Program
BILOXI, Miss., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southern Gaming Summit has traditionally tackled the cutting edge issues confronting the gaming industry, and the 1999 version of the conference will be not different.
At the Summit, May 5 & 6, 1999 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center, experts will reveal the latest data on research and treatment of problem gambling. The issue has been thoroughly examined by the federal panel studying the impact of gambling on the United States, but the industry response began long before the formation of this commission.
At an afternoon session on May 5, Dr. Howard Shaffer, the director of Harvard Medical School's Division on Addictions, will hold a "town hall" meeting that will solicit feedback from the general public. Dr. Shaffer will give an update of the current research that has been conducted to date, and discuss such issues as research trends, casino employee health and how science understands these problems. This program will be of specific interest to casino employees, industry executives, policy-makers, and health-care providers as it touches on a variety of issues related to employee health.
On May 6, the American Gaming Association will debut its new program designed to establish standards to help casino companies cope with the issue. Called "PROGRESS" (Promoting Responsible Gaming Resources and Education Standards), the program fills the need for uniform industry standards in addressing disordered gambling and underage gambling prevention. The American Gaming Association has created these standards and developed a comprehensive responsible gaming program that will bring casinos and parimutuel facilities up to par. The panel will be moderated by Mirage Resorts Vice President of Public Affairs Alan Feldman and includes Judy Patterson, Executive Director and VP, American Gaming Association; Betty Greer, Executive Director, Mississippi Council on Problem & Compulsive Gambling; and Dr. Howard Shaffer.
