<<I went to an opera the other night--- I'll be brief--- The applause at the end , coupled with the laughs at the Humour, and overhearing someone in the lobby at the end say, " That was excellent" made me wonder if these people were for real.. I thought it was mediocre, with base humour, and I've only seen three operas.. Conclusion-- I'm not up to their level of sophistication/cultivation (very possible) or the opera attending crowd are in large,, phonies.... probably a combination>> Nietzsche was making similiar comments about Opera goers 100 years ago... I for one dont doubt your observation at all.
