Mirror Group Launches Free Internet Access Service Dow Jones Newswires
LONDON -- Mirror Group PLC (U.MGN) Friday launched its free Internet access service, ic24.net.
The U.K. media giant said it had more than GBP1 million in committed advertising revenue ahead of the launch and that 50,000 people had subscribed to its free access CD.
The company has also formed a partnership with Books on Line and Bertelsmann AG's (G.BRT) new e-commerce venture to create an on-line books channel.
As part of this, Cable & Wireless PLC (CWP) has invested GBP15 million in the project. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is providing the operating platform, while Compaq (CPQ) will deal in hardware support.
The package includes a site that deals in news from the company's main paper titles including sport, entertainment, pictures, business, games, TV listings, weather and online shopping.
British Telecommunications PLC's (BTY) Wireplay, the U.K.'s most popular dial-up gaming service, will be the major provider of ic24's gaming content. |
