CB,
Your advice and thoughts would be helpful for me. I got into a strange situation last year while working with a lawyer. Briefly, we placed a bid on a house, put 10k in escrow, bid accepted, and we went out of town while lawyers were working out the details. Seller's lawyer wanted to make changes, my lawyer refused to even look at it, because the changes were something we hadn't discussed prior to us leaving. Seller's lawyer then said he's putting the house back on the market. My lawyer said screw you (to the other lawyer) and got into a muscle flexing contest. House broker found us and said we no longer have the house, we said fine, to hell with it. Come back and we're told we have to buy the house anyway, despite the seller putting the house back on the market. We said screw that, even though our lawyer said we may still be bound by the contract, which had already been signed. Finally, we reached an agreement with seller for part of the deposit back and the end the deal. The interactions between the two lawyers were strained throughout the negotiations, as if they never liked each other. They made each move a pain in the ass for their counterpart. Additionally, my lawyer didn't seem that competent. There would be many simple questions that he couldn't answer that my real estate agent knew.

At any rate, I felt like my lawyer gave me some bad advice, but just wanted the whole lousy episode to fade away. It has. The only interesting thing and curious question I have for you is this....I never got a bill from my lawyer......Is that like an admission of guilt? As background, he is a young graduate and works in family's firm in a small town. You think his overseers said---don't you dare send them a bill and hope to god we don't hear from another lawyer representing them. Why wouldn't I get a bill for his services---as bad as they were. I don't think it's an overlooked bill. This episode occured about 10 months ago.

Thanks for your thought.
mike
