True, USR was the first to announce 56K, but Rockwell and its camp have caught up quickly. The race is just about dead even. USR still has a slight lead with the ISPs, but I expect that to close quickly also. Reason - Rockwell is a stronger company with deeper ties and larger cross-section of customers that will help them push K56Flex. Lucent is a key player in communications we know, but when Motorola added their support to the camp, the weight shifted to Rockwell.

Rockwell also has (4) fabs cranking out wafers in Newport Beach. USR has none. Rockwell has additional fab relationships with other large companies such as Samsung to produce wafers in crunch time. USR relies on manufacturers who are busy not only producing USRs but their own (never forget the wafer crunch shortage of 1995... you know purchasing VPs don't).

Software CODECs. Yes, their cool, but as soon as processor speeds increase, little old companies like Microsoft take advantage and bog the system right back down with heavier, sloppy code (ok, or cooler features). The software modems (for those who have not caught on...) work for a little while until this happens... and it always will. Semiconductors will be around for a few more years. fabs, Fabs, FABS!

IMHO that is!
