Van Sun says Ballard cars zippy Ballard Power Systems Inc BLD Shares issued 83,319,317 Apr 29 close $54.65 Fri 30 Apr 99 In the News The Vancouver Sun reports in a front page story in its Friday edition that Ballard Power Systems' fuel cell cars whine, not roar, but otherwise they are just cars. Reporter William Boei says that 40 journalists, including 15 from other Canadian cities and a couple from the United States, showed up Thursday at Ballard's headquarters to kick the tires of the new cars, stare intently into their tightly packed engine compartments and take them for a spin. The two cars tested were the P2000, Ford Motor's prototype fuel cell passenger sedan, and DaimlerChrysler's compact Necar 4. Other than the unfamiliar sound effects, driving a fuel cell car is much like driving any other car. Flooring the pedal did not make the tires squeal, but both cars accelerated at a zippy pace, somewhat less energetic than a vintage MGB and a bit more perky than a Ford Escort. Ballard president Firoz Rasul was perfectly happy to hear that driving the cars was an unremarkable experience.
