Here's an extreme/absurd case of what eBay can do:

It seems to me that eBay has the potential of becoming a great enabler of market efficiency. Buyers benefit from being able to set their price on a product (and hence set the market), sellers from connecting directly with a lot more buyers.

It looks to me like eBay (and similar i-markets, including Yahoo!) can do for consumers and the general marketplace what NASDAQ (and NYSE) have done for individual investors and the stock market.

Just trying to fuel the fire and get some more feedback on where everyone thinks the web will go next.
