This seems to flare up now and then. I don't know what we can do about it except voice disapproval and be patient.

I think the physical safety of the venue is partially responsible. Have you ever seen a dog who barks and snarls and snaps behind a chain-link fence, but instantly becomes much less aggressive if the gate is opened and he is no longer physically separated from the object of his display? I think the safety of the internet provides the chain-link fence here. If we were all in a room together, I doubt we would see this.

I would very much prefer that disagreements were polite. Surely this should be possible, but perhaps for some it is too satisfying to vent their emotions here. So satisfying that the fact that they damage the thread and make themselves look foolish is of lesser importance.

I think almost everyone would agree that a well-reasoned, fact-supported, non-emotional, non-personally assaultive response to an accusation or disagreement is much more convincing and admirable than personal attacks and insults. But evidently making one's point or supporting one's position are not the real purpose of such posts.
