SHORT POSITIONS

-- C-Cube capers: Whenever this column quotes short-sellers suggesting doom for a specific company, and then the stock falls, investors in that company suspect I must somehow be profiting from its downfall. It has happened repeatedly over the past nine years, most recently with Iomega, and now with C-Cube.

So, for new readers, here's this column's long-standing (and previously published) policy: Neither I, nor members of my immediate family, own or short individual stocks. We do not have investments with limited partnerships or hedge funds. The only thing we can own is mutual funds.

Oh, and when I have meals with short-sellers, we go dutch.
