My father-in-law, who was not a PC kinda guy, used to say that after the Mexican-American war, the Mexicans complained that, not only had we taken half their land, we had taken the part with the good roads!

This country was formerly a collection of colonies, too. I don't think colonialism is the only reason why certain cultures are not technologically advanced. Our values are different. I am not saying that our way is better, but if others envy our wealth, they would do better to espouse our values. It may not be worth it to them.

Think about it. If you want a good idea, look at Iran. Working women are the backbone of most modern offices in Western societies. Young people fresh out of college sometimes tell old people what to do. The work ethic means much less time for family and church. It wasn't worth it to the people of Iran. They decided to go back to the old ways.
