I've been trying like crazy to understand the recent DOCSIS announcements.

I've talked to CMTO and think I understand their status. On the last conference call they said they were looking for certification during the first half of the year. On this wave they entered their Broadcom 3300 chip because their customers wanted toll-quality voice --- a far bigger challenge because of the software involved. Because of the complexity, they didn't pass and yet, had they passed, they would have gone into the next round anyway, this time based on recent changes. The standards state that any changes have to be re-tested.

In short, the process is on-going and each stage means you're certified at that point.

Now, to further complicate my education (where ignorance is bliss. . .), I just talked to Cablelabs and was told none of the companies who've passed DOCSIS certification so far include toll-quality voice. The confusion comes in being told voice and QoS aren't part of the 1.0 testing, but will be included in the 1.1 tests. It appears CMTO set their bar pretty high and hope to gain 1.0 certification on a chip that's loaded with software for the 1.1. As I say, I'm a bit cloudy on this and will try to get further clarification.

In the interim, I've added substantially to my position.
