Update: ATI to buy Chromatic, MCC

The current sales leader in PC graphics chips, ATI Technologies Inc., has
agreed to acquire multimedia IC vendor Chromatic Research Inc. for $67
million in stock, part of its ongoing push into set-top boxes, analysts said.

While ATI's acquisition initially looked as though it could prove to be the
final stake in the coffin of Chromatic's Mpact product line, today, Chicago's
Multimedia Convergence Corp. (MCC), a startup manufacturer of set-top
box PCs, announced that it signed a letter of intent to acquire the Mpact
line, which combines various multimedia processing functions into a single
chip.

MCC will also license the Mpact intellectual property from Chromatic, which
will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of ATI, but will probably retain its
identity and current headquarters, according to John Monti, vice-president
of marketing at Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Chromatic. Executives at ATI,
based in Thornhill, Ontario, did not return calls asking for comment on the
acquisition.
