I thought it was you that mentioned you were N-tier ? Now your telling me your systems is simple client-server bringing us back to your original point of client-server being dead ? Client server will never die (just be renamed) since distributed computing inherently involves retrieving/managing some centrally located data; whether on one server or N servers.

Regarding PC's on the desktop I'd say they are an effective, cheap and easy to maintain endpoint. What were you planning to have at the client?

Regarding DCOM, never played with it. I would say (SUNW plug) that Java inherently is component oriented since you can serialize objects and send/receive them over a socket; if you have a clean slate. This also gives you platform independance on the client. IMHO.
