Hey Ag, thread: Been traveling this week and come back to the latest GBLX coup, we hope. Annunziata does not think small, does he?
I guess the question that immediately struck me was that in terms of profitability of the C&W unit going forward, in the context of a profit center in its own right and not in the context of a strategic piece in the GBLX arsenal, wouldn't you think that we have a Lucent/AT&T issue here? In part, T spun off LU because management of both companies felt that LU was being penalized in its vendor bids because, in some cases, carriers otherwise disposed to do business with LU did not want to line a competitor's pockets. This also applied to the CLECs who saw in deregulation T as a future competitor.
Perhaps capacity in this segment is so constrained that LVLT, WMS, GTS(?) and others can not afford not to use Global Marine if available. On the CC replay, I believe that it was Klugman, the last analyst to get in a question, who alluded to this issue as well. The GBLX officer who took the question was completely non-responsive. He either didn't understand the reference or chose to duck it.
Regards. Liacos_samui
