Externally imposed totalitarian government was not limited to Iran either. Consistent theme here of secular post-colonial government - far from perfect but at least capable of evolution - squashed by external forces for reasons totally unrelated to the welfare of the people in the country. Islamic fundamentalism rose as a counterweight to political interference and economic domination - remember the days when the oil companies told producing nations what the price of oil would be - from the west. Just as the communist revolutions in Asia and Latin America grew out of the American policy of subsidizing feudal dictatorships that stifled legitimate dissent in those countries. These things don't just happen by themselves.
